Recent surveys of Georgia secondary science teachers found that 72% did not decide to become science teachers before reaching college. If you are interested in science or mathematics, we invite you to explore the teaching field with the support of MASST. This group of dedicated individuals at Columbus State University include educators from the Colleges of Education and Science who are available to help you become a highly qualified teacher in one of the “in-demand” teaching areas of Mathematics, Chemistry, Biology, and Geology/Earth Science.
WHY DO YOU WANT TO TEACH?
This question has been asked to people who have expressed their desire to become a teacher. Depending upon which words were emphasized, the question can sound contemptible, incomprehensible, or derogatory!
“WHY do you want to teach?” “Why DO you want to teach? “Why do YOU want to teach?” “Why do you WANT to teach?” and lastly, “Why do you want TO TEACH?” Everyone has his or her own reasons for becoming a teacher. Each one is personal and forged from a lifetime of experiences. An article in the November 1997 publication of Research in Education by Ivan Reid and Jonathan Caudwell outlined what their research discovered. A questionnaire was filled out by pre-service teachers and asked them to identify reasons why they wanted to teach. Items marked “very important” were:
